After I was done replacing my shutter-button I realized that you can actually use double sided tape to unscrew the old shutter-button without the need to open the whole camera apart. Well, too late.

If you just want a great PERMANENT FIX for the button that pops off here it is and it really works great and need NO PARTS from the factory and costs bout a buck: Employ a thumbtack (cutting the point and a small bit more off the end so the thumbtack sits just at the lim of the hole for the original button. Go to Home Depot and get a pack of 5/32″ rubber washers. Take a small amount of rubbre glue or silicone and apply it to the washer on both sides. Push the washer onto the stem where the button was located (just push it into the hole) Put a bity of the rubber cement (or silicone) on the stem and bottom of the tack and then put the tack into the hole where the button came out. Check to make sure you easily trigger the shutter then put a piece of masking tape lightly over the tack to hold it in place. Let it dry and you will have a button that looks and FEELS just like the original only better

I am aware that this is a very old post, but this problem just happened to me. I removed the shutter button assembly without disassembling the camera and it has a square peg that will break off if you do it this way. I have not received my new button assembly yet, but i will be disassembling the camera to replace so i do not break the replacement part.

Thanks for a very informative article !!!

I repaired my shutter button for 2 €.
I bought it on eBay, look for DSC H5 in the low prices.
I didn’t go all the way through this dismantling, though.
Not aware of the problem, I forcedly twisted the button open.
Don’t do that if you hate to break a leg ;-) locking stud.
I managed by filing protuberances away and gluing the button on.

Thank you Uncle B! I needed a cheaper alternative to Sony’s crazy price of $175 just to replace the broken shutter button!! I’m filling out the DarnToothySam repair form now!

    Hi Chris-
    This happened to my camera:(
I just want to make sure I understand what your saying..

I need to remove the button on my camera (do I have to unscrew anything? or will it just pop off?)
Then I need to glue the washer over where the button was. After I need to place a thumb tack (that I cut a little) over the washer, leaving the remaining of the needle part to go inside the hole?

    Please get back to me:)
    Thanks!
