Who killed my G9?

Do you have a Canon G9 died suddenly? You would find you are not alone when searching on the Internet.
If you are a G9 owner, you better read this tip, even your G9 is still alive. Why? Because there is a timer-bomb clicking inside! You don’t know when it is going to be triggered.
How to dismantle it? I’ll show you.But take out the battery before reading this tips.
Take off all the screws around the camera. Don’t forget this one.

THIS IS THE KILLER!

These loosen screws will go anywhere inside the camera. They may short the DC/DC board even the main board.

In this case, I found the fuse (shown with a letter ‘R’) was open.  I connected a meter, lucky me, the unit turned on!

What is the remedy?

Before I find out the exact part number for the fuse, here is the temporary solution:
1. replace the fuse with a 1A 32V SMD fuse. (I found the current was not over 500mA)
2. put those screws back on the top cover with a little bit Thread Locker.

If the new fuse won’t solve your problem, you may need to replace the DC/DC board or main board .

Is your G9 still alive? You better open it,  check  it out.

Does anyone know if this same problem exists with the Canon G10, G11 or G12? I am considering getting one of these but do not want to buy problems down the road. Thanks.

Hi same here !!! I own two Canon G9.
The first one had exactly the srews loosed at the indicated place.
I tried to repair the fuse by myself but it is too difficult.
    I finally ordered a new DC/DC board at http://www.darntoothysam.com/products/Canon-PowerShot-G9-Camera-DC%7B47%7DDC-PCB-Board-Fuse.html
These guys also repair the camera if you do not feel OK to do it yourself.
I checked the second G9 but OK so far.
Thank you for your website !

I had the same darn thing happen… However, my fuse was still good, so I called Canon Parts at 1-866-481-2569 and the replacement part was $32.41+$6.00 shipping. Can’t believe the screw was in the same place! AMAZING!

I just ordered a replacement DC board off eBay, but it turns out the camera switches on just fine with a cheapo replacement battery! For the record, I did open up my G9 and re-attach one of these two screws that had fallen out…

I still have the problem with the ISO dial no longer working properly though, like someone else mentioned earlier. Has anyone come across that before?

Thanks! I got a replacement board from Darn T. and it worked perfectly. Because I replaced the whole DC/DC board I swapped the old coin battery to the new DC/DC board. After I put it back together it powered up just fine but took a few minutes till I could set the clock, the set/function button and the wheel just acted balky. Maybe the caps had to recharge? Anyway it work great. Locktite on all the screws….

Thanks again for the photos and instructions.

just about to tackle my g7 and wondering if there’s anything different I’ll find. It has the exact problem in that it won’t turn on.

Also, a list of tools or screwdriver sizes would be helpful.

    thanks for the work.
