Who killed my G9?
Do you have a Canon G9 died suddenly? You would find you are not alone when searching on the Internet.
If you are a G9 owner, you better read this tip, even your G9 is still alive. Why? Because there is a timer-bomb clicking inside! You don’t know when it is going to be triggered.
How to dismantle it? I’ll show you.But take out the battery before reading this tips.
Take off all the screws around the camera. Don’t forget this one.

Remove the ring on the front cover and open up the camera. Can you see some thing weird? Not sure? Keep going.
Remove the screw here.
Remove screws shown on here, and take off the small cover.
Disconnect the cables and remove these screws too.
The screws fell off! This is the one you have seen on Figure 2. Where is the other one?
Here it is.
Disconnect the cable and turn over the board…
These loosen screws will go anywhere inside the camera. They may short the DC/DC board even the main board.
In this case, I found the fuse (shown with a letter ‘R’) was open. I connected a meter, lucky me, the unit turned on!
What is the remedy?
Before I find out the exact part number for the fuse, here is the temporary solution:
1. replace the fuse with a 1A 32V SMD fuse. (I found the current was not over 500mA)
2. put those screws back on the top cover with a little bit Thread Locker.
If the new fuse won’t solve your problem, you may need to replace the DC/DC board or main board .
Is your G9 still alive? You better open it, check it out.

Big big thanks! Followed your instructions and replaced the fuse and refitted the the loose screws. The fuse appeared to be ok when tested ,but I think the probes were closing the fuse.
Had to use the fuji fine pics aint anywhere near as good.
Thanks again
Hi,
Thanks a lot for providing all of this information! Just last week my G9 started refusing to power up – it would turn on about 10% of the time, but usually it just refused to come on. Also, occasionally when I put the battery pack in and closed the compartment, the flash would go off on its own but the camera itself would not power up.
I followed your instructions up to photo 5, and noticed that the middle screw wasn’t there! (Which is good, because I couldn’t work out how to disconnect the larger cable on the left of the picture.) A fair bit of shaking, and 5 minutes of frantic searching on the floor later, and I had the missing screw in my hand.
As I was putting it all back together, I gave it another shake just before I replaced the back casing, and ANOTHER screw fell out into my hand! I figured a missing screw is better than a loose one rattling around, so I’ve kept it out of the camera for now. It’s working fine now! I just hope that extra screw won’t turn out to be too important.
How many other people are having similar problems to this? Canon wanted to charge me around £160 as a MINIMUM repair charge!
I stumbled across this site a while ago as I had this same problem happen with my G9. Canon should really do something about this. I originally wanted to try unsoldering the fuse and replacing it until I saw how tiny it was. I don’t know how anyone cane do that, unless it requires some sort of special soldering tool to do. I found the dc/dc board for these G9′s at the following link: http://www.camerasandparts.com/g9.html I ordered a used board from them and it came fast and worked like a charm, my G9 is perfect again. They have something on there site where they can look after this problem for you but to be honest, it was pretty simple to do considering the limited skills I have at this. Best of luck, it’s a really simple fix once you have the board. The instructions on this site are so precise and perfect, thanks for having this site up and helping everyone with this. The pictures and instructions that you have are extremely helpful and I’m certain they are very much appreciated by users that need help with their G9′s.
Does anyone know where I can get the fuse to replace the old one?
Hi Gabriel. To answer your question, you can get that at: camerasandparts.com I know they have the whole board for very little and I’m sure if you email them, they’ll sell you just the fuse. I don’t know their email address but I’m sure it’s somewhere on their site. They only deal with these canon’s, they literally have everything for any powershot problem, hope that helps. good luck
Great web site. Thanks for the info. My G9 failed this same way. That same screw fell deep inside and shorted both the main system board and DC/DC power board. I sent it to Canon with $150 check, but they returned both G9 and my check saying camera was “not economical to fix”. Oh, and they claimed they never heard of this loose screw problem. Yeah right.
So I sent it to camerasandparts.com and they repaired it perfectly, for $90, incl. shipping!!! Awesome!!! My G9 works perfectly again, and I’m so impressed. They repair only Canon cameras, but offer a better service than Canon itself. Wow.
…Ivan
They have the fuse for this at camerasandparts.com Some other shops might also have it, you could also try ebay for it too.
My wife just got the G11, so as a last resort I tried your tip on the dead G9. I have never taken a camera apart before. The exact same screw was missing and the one next to it was very loose, but I can not find the missing screw. The camera is over 2 years old.
Thanks for the pics and instructions! Had 1 screw loose, got it out, put everything back together, and it turned right on. I really appreciate your time.
Ya, you can get the fuse at camerasandparts.com I think they even have the whole board too.
