Who killed my G9?
Do you have a Canon G9 died suddenly? You would find you are not alone when searching on the Internet.
If you are a G9 owner, you better read this tip, even your G9 is still alive. Why? Because there is a timer-bomb clicking inside! You don’t know when it is going to be triggered.
How to dismantle it? I’ll show you.But take out the battery before reading this tips.
Take off all the screws around the camera. Don’t forget this one.

Remove the ring on the front cover and open up the camera. Can you see some thing weird? Not sure? Keep going.
Remove the screw here.
Remove screws shown on here, and take off the small cover.
Disconnect the cables and remove these screws too.
The screws fell off! This is the one you have seen on Figure 2. Where is the other one?
Here it is.
Disconnect the cable and turn over the board…
These loosen screws will go anywhere inside the camera. They may short the DC/DC board even the main board.
In this case, I found the fuse (shown with a letter ‘R’) was open. I connected a meter, lucky me, the unit turned on!
What is the remedy?
Before I find out the exact part number for the fuse, here is the temporary solution:
1. replace the fuse with a 1A 32V SMD fuse. (I found the current was not over 500mA)
2. put those screws back on the top cover with a little bit Thread Locker.
If the new fuse won’t solve your problem, you may need to replace the DC/DC board or main board .
Is your G9 still alive? You better open it, check it out.

they have the fuses at camerasandparts.com
I have the same problem with my G9. I opened it as described above, but the fuse was closed, so I assume problem is not the fuse. Is there any way to determine what the problem is, DC/DC board or main board. Camera is no longer under warranty so the cheapest option is to repair it by myself, if I could only know what is wrong with it. Any advice would be appreciated. Sending it to the US for servicing at camerasandparts.com I don’t think is the smartest thing to do because I live in Europe (Bosnia & Herzegovina) and postage would rip me off.
Ohh, Why i did not do anyresearch erlier ?!! This happen today to my G9. Very same fricking incident
Great tutorial. I have the same problem with my G9. Fuse mentioned above unfortunately is not open, so I assume problem must be either DC/DC board or main board. Question is how to determine which of those two is faulty. Sending camera for servicing at camerasandparts.com is the last option because I live in Europe (Bosnia & Herzegovina) and postage to the US would rip me off. I’m thinking of ordering spare part and changing it by myself. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
Sorry for two same posts
Thanks for the info! easy fix….Now if someone knows how to clean the PEC
Yesterday, I opened another G9 (my brother’s) although it was still working one screw was missing and I could not find it anywhere. Hope it fell out of the case, because i could not hear it inside.
***MY FIX FOR THE FUSE AT NO COST***
Great tutorial.
Today I fixed my G9. Guess what I found when opening the camera? Both screws in photo F6 had left their holes. I checked the fuse and it was open. What to do? I considered ordering a fuse or find a spare … but then I made the following desicion: My G9 is close to 3 years old. Normal life for digital cameras are let´s say 5-7 years before newer ones outperforms so that the value is lost. Thus: I decided to “make” a fuse. I simply took one very tiny wire out of an audio cable and used only ONE single core to short-circuit the fuse. I just soldered the single copper core ontop of the fuse two connector sides, assembled the camera and now it´s working. The F****ing screws where permanently fixed with cyanoacrylatic glue (superglue), making sure that they will not again short my dc-dc board. Hopefully this gives my G9 a few more years to live. If the DC-DC board goes dead I will buy a new board. I think this fix will be the easiest for everyone.
I am currently facing the same problem, once my G9 died, I operated on it (thanks to the expert guidance here) and put the screw back in its place but still it wont power up. Not having much knowledge abt electronics (that too at such small scale), I am wondering what to do. I am currently in Japan with minimum Japanese skills so I cannot even argue with the Canon service centre as the camera is out of warranty. I was planning to order a DC/DC Board from camerasandparts.com but before doing that I need to make sure that it will solve the problem. I read that the fuse can be checked using an OHM meter. I have no idea how it works, if someone can provide some guidance to me so that I can, 1) check the fuse; and 2) check the DC/DC board, then it would be of great help. Thank you in advance.
I opened mine and I had one screw out and the other was already coming loose. Everything was exactly like this site shows with the pictures (this is a helpful site). I put lock-tite on the screws this time. Also, the one that fell out was under the main board, I had to tear the camera down pretty good to find it (didn’t want to leave it in there anywhere to short out again). I bypassed the blown fuse and the camera powered right up. The problem I now have is the focus is messed up on the camera unless I zoom out. I took it to a local shop who told me that can sometimes happen after a short but they wanted over $200 just to fix the focus problem. They said I need a main board for the camera. Anybody know where I can buy that? If I can buy the part, I know it’s simple to replace as I had already removed the old one to find the loose screw. If someone knows where I can get the main board, please let me know. I already look on ebay and no luck.
