Who killed my G9?
Do you have a Canon G9 died suddenly? You would find you are not alone when searching on the Internet.
If you are a G9 owner, you better read this tip, even your G9 is still alive. Why? Because there is a timer-bomb clicking inside! You don’t know when it is going to be triggered.
How to dismantle it? I’ll show you.But take out the battery before reading this tips.
Take off all the screws around the camera. Don’t forget this one.

Remove the ring on the front cover and open up the camera. Can you see some thing weird? Not sure? Keep going.
Remove the screw here.
Remove screws shown on here, and take off the small cover.
Disconnect the cables and remove these screws too.
The screws fell off! This is the one you have seen on Figure 2. Where is the other one?
Here it is.
Disconnect the cable and turn over the board…
These loosen screws will go anywhere inside the camera. They may short the DC/DC board even the main board.
In this case, I found the fuse (shown with a letter ‘R’) was open. I connected a meter, lucky me, the unit turned on!
What is the remedy?
Before I find out the exact part number for the fuse, here is the temporary solution:
1. replace the fuse with a 1A 32V SMD fuse. (I found the current was not over 500mA)
2. put those screws back on the top cover with a little bit Thread Locker.
If the new fuse won’t solve your problem, you may need to replace the DC/DC board or main board .
Is your G9 still alive? You better open it, check it out.

I’ve got the same problem. Camera wouldn’t power on, even minutes after last using it. I’ve always noticed a rattle, but I figured it was a jiggly button cap or something internal. (Broke 2 years to the day from purchase)
Talked to the manager of the Canon service dept. and he said in the 10 years he’s worked there, this is the first he’s heard of it. He said that they can’t determine the cause without seeing it first so I sent it in on my dime and I’ve just received an email from them saying they got the camera in.
Calling tomorrow to see what they say.
I suppose I’m just writing this to add another, ‘me too’ to the, G9 suddenly won’t power on, pile.
Hey, nice site you got here! Keep up the excellent work
Can the loose screws fall below the mainboard where you showed your screw on the fuse? I sent my camera into camerasandparts.com and had a horrible experience with them. They sent me a refurbished camera and again I have no power 4 months later. Have taken camera apart and both screws are missing. Perhaps this repair shop just removes the screws to fix the issue? Either that or I need to dig deeper into the camera. Thoughts?
What ring on the front cover? Is it the one around the lens? If so, how do I remove it. Thx – Rusty
As many times as I tried to explain to them the loose screw problem, they insisted it was water damage. I hadn’t paid them at that point to look at it yet, so I don’t know how they came to that conclusion, but it smells fishy. I asked for photographic evidence, they said sure, then the very next day I had the camera back in my hands, repaired, and with no mention of water damage.
Parts replaced. 1 screw, 1 motherboard, and a DC/DC converter. Including the cost of shipping, I’m out $200 because they didn’t use a thread lock.
I’ve called the service department and they said since there wasn’t a service advisory issued, there was nothing they could do. I’m trying to get a hold of the Customer Service Manager, Dave, to see if there’s anything else he could do for me, but it’s not looking good. Still waiting for a call back.
Since it’s a year out of warranty I’m not sure how I can be properly compensated, but I’ll try.
@dale
Also to add quickly, Canon says 2 years is “a perfectly reasonable life span for a digital camera.” So read into that however you like.
This is great… but in F8, how do you take the strip out to flip it open? Cant see anything to lift up?
I’m 99.9% sure there is a screw in there somewhere. One fell out when i opened it and can hear something rattling around. Tried holding onto anything that could be rattling, ie, the lens and battery covers but there is definately a noise. Did try closing it all up again and trying again but still nothing.
Also, i have no idea when it comes to electricals but if you see the R does that mean the fuse has gone?? I can see the r if i get torch to shine into the board…
ooh ok i got the cable open so can see the board but now im stuck…. how can i test the fuse?
I can still hear rattling and can figure out where it is…hmmm…. darn screw!!!! Trying to work out if i can open up anywhere else?
i dropped my camera today and it refused to power up. I figured the screw might have gone loose and I opened up my camera. I found a loose screw, took it out and reassembled the camera…. and lo and behold… it still din work.
Can someone pls explain how they check if the fuse have blown? Cos I’m not sure which circuit board has blown and would like to know so I can get the spare part.
Also, does anyone have recommendations for camera repairs in UK (I live in Dundee, Scotland).
I managed to fix my camera. turns out that when I dropped the camera, the cable in “F8″ photo was jarred out of its socket. Pushing it back in solved my problem.
kudos to this website!
